Troubleshooting Basic VoIP

Many VoIP problems can be solved by yourself without the need for contacting technical support.  Below is a list of some of the most common things to check if you are having VoIP problems.  In most cases, it's the first items any tech support representative would have you try, so having them done already saves time in the long run.  You can also check out: www.VoipTroubleshooter.com.  They have several online tools that allow network managers and residential users to test their systems and troubleshoot issues.  You can also check with your VoIP Provider and see if they have a troubleshooting section on their website.

  • Try power cycling the VoIP Adapter.  Unplug the power, wait 30 seconds, then plug the power back in.  Make sure that you actually unplug the adapter, not just push the power button (if it has one).
  • Make sure that the cable modem is functioning properly.  If the cable modem is having problems then the adapter won't be able to process calls.  Power Cycling your cable modem is always an option as well.
  • Try swapping cables.  Cables can often go bad, even ones straight out of the package could possibly be defective.  Try a different network cable and phone cable.
  • Try using a different phone.  While almost all phones are compatible, there is always the off chance that a particular phone won't work.  Trying a different phone can determine if it's a phone issue or not.
  • If you have the system wired to use all the ports in your home, try switching back to just a single phone temporarily to test the adapter itself.
  • A common sense issue, but one that often is overlooked, is to check the power for your modem, router, and adapter.  Make sure each has lights on (solid or blinking).  The cable may be plugged in but the plug to the wall may have come out, or the power strip may have been switched off.
