What exactly is VoIP?

VoIP is a service that allows you to make local and long distance phone calls using your internet connection. With some services, it's as simple as plugging your standard telephone in to a device that is provided by the service provider, connecting the device to the Internet and start making calls. With other online VoIP services, you would use your computer to download free software and make calls using the software on your computer.

VoIP is different from your regular telephone service

To properly use VoIP, you require a high speed Internet connection, such as DSL, Cable or a T1 connection. Most residential homes in USA and Canada now have the ability to purchase high speed broadband Internet through a number of providers. Due to the slower speeds of 'dial-up Internet', VoIP will not operate with these services. Click here for a list of DSL, Cable and Satellite Internet providers in the US.

What are the hardware requirements for residential VoIP service?

  1. Telephone (any one in your house that you are currently using)
  2. High speed Internet connect (DSL/Cable)
  3. Router - the device that connects your computer to the Internet
  4. VoIP phone adapter provided by your VoIP service provider
  5. Software (optional with some services)

What does an 'Unlimited Plan' service plan mean?

With most VoIP service providers, unlimited means unlimited. What that means is that you can make calls any day of the week and at any time of day to whoever is within your calling area.

The most common unlimited calling areas are: USA and Canada. Some VoIP service providers have calling areas that also include countries such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, UK and more.
